IS IT HAPPENING?

A short film on aesthetic theory and the sublime (2010).

The Kantian aesthetic of the sublime is represented as a passage from the aesthetic to a phenomenon that cannot be deciphered by the senses. According to Jean- François Lyotard, the infinite also defeats the imagination when it is experienced in avant-garde art, to ask the question: “Is it happening?”

CORPUS: A WORK IN PROGRESS

As someone with a physical disability, I have an interest in words that rationalize the body into something that can be measured, contained, and understood. The contradiction of being an embodied human is that words will never adequately represent us because the body is a process in a continual state of flux, imperfect, irrational, and mortal.

This film was made by photographing still images of my own body and writing on the flesh or projecting text from a light source onto the skin. In representing a terrain removed of recognizable features Corpus depicts the battleground of words struggling to define the human body and identity, leading to my final word on the subject.
